Lost kayaker rescued during Wednesday night storms

Around 11:30pm on Wednesday night, July 5, Smith County 911 received a call from a kayaker on the Caner Fork River who was lost and needed help getting back to his vehicle.

The Smith County Rescue Squad Water Rescue team was dispatched to the area of Seabowisha Lane to begin looking of the kayaker. Smith County 911 was able to ping the kayaker’s cell phone and determine that he was in the Lancaster area, possibly near Seabowisha Lane.

After searching for several hours during heavy rain, Rescue Squad members found the kayaker in Smith Fork Creek around 3AM. The kayaker was identified as Ryan Miller of Memphis, TN.

Miller had entered the water at Happy Hollow around 5pm and kayaked down river. As he attempted to kayak back up river to return to his vehicle, it began to get dark and he turned onto Smith Fork Creek, where he became lost.
