(Smith County Insider Press) South Carthage, Tenn. – On October 4, 2016 the Smith County Board of Education held a work session in the gymnasium of Smith County Middle School. The meeting was held to discuss ideas related to overcrowding at Gordonsville Elementary School and the potential growth of the Gordonsville area over the next several years. Several board members, along with Director Barry Smith spoke out about potential solutions to the problem.
Gordonsville School Board Member, Tommy Manning, proposed possibly turning the current High School Football locker room located in the Gordonsville Elementary building into additional class rooms. He stated, “we could possibly build a metal type field house building on the grounds for the football team to get dressed in.”
Defeated School Board Member, Robin Moore stated, “I don’t think the “Band-Aid approach is a good idea.” Moore continued to say, “I want something that is going to work for us long term.”
Director of Schools, Barry Smith stated, “My proposal is to take New Middleton and turn it into a K-2 School, which would also have Pre-K.” He continued to say, “this would cost the county nothing, and potentially save the county money.”
