The southern half of Smith County kick started an early celebration to our nation’s freedom when the small town of Lancaster held its yearly Independence Day Parade. Sunday, June 28th, marked the 11th time the rural, quaint community celebrated a significant part in our nation’s history.
The parade’s route runs from east to west through the heartland of Lancaster on a one mile segment of Highway 141. With the streets lined with the hundreds of spectators and american flags, 6:00 p.m. marked the starting for the parade. Afterwards, the usual festivities began on the “village green”.
On stage the evening and night activities began with an invocation and the “Star Spangled Banner”. As the onlookers enjoyed bluegrass music, food accommodations were provided such as hamburgers, hotdogs, popcorn, snow cones, and homemade ice cream. Fellowship and old memories filled the air as life-long residents along with out-of-state visitors shared old stories and times of the past.
Not only was the talk of the town once again a successful parade and turnout, but the weather. The event was fortunate to have some of the best weather it has seen in its 11 installments. It was an unusual scene at the end of June to see some individuals with light jackets on as the night was concluded with a splendid fireworks display.
The organizers of the event would like to think all of the people who came out to celebrate our nation’s independence. An invitation has been extended to those who intend to return next year and also a request to those who have never been to participate this unique experience.
