A traffic stop on Highway 70 led to a K9 deployment uncovering drugs on December 16. Smith County Deputy Matt White conducted the traffic stop and was assisted by K9 Sgt. Ridge Long. Upon contact with the driver, Cory Cooper, it was observed that Cooper displayed shaky hands, dilated pupils, and red conjunct of the eyes, all consistent with cannabis use.

A record’s check revealed that Cooper had prior narcotics convictions, which gave reasonable suspicion. K9 Constance was deployed for a free air sniff of the vehicle.

During the sniff, K9 Constance did indicate to the driver side door of the vehicle. Cooper admitted he had a marijuana roach in the vehicle. According to the police report, a further search uncovered approximately 0.5 grams of methamphetamine, 0.96 grams of cocaine, and a marijuana roach. The meth and cocaine was located in Cooper’s wallet that was present in the vehicle.

Also discovered was a black bag that contained a box of several C02 wipe cans, a black cracker, and balloons.  The items are known as a whippet’s kit. Cooper admitted to prior history of using and consuming them.Cooper was placed under arrest and was taken to the Smith County Sheriff’s Office for booking.
