(Smith County Insider Press) Carthage, Tenn. – On Tuesday, April 14, a Smith County Jury found Douglas McArthur Wilson guilty of attempted 2nd Degree Murder.
Wilson was charged in 2012 with the attempted murder of Timothy Bennett following a near death incident between the two individuals. Wilson was charged for allegedly cutting Timothy Bennett’s throat on December 23, 2012. When authorities arrived on scene, they found Bennett laying in the kitchen of the residence at 13 Pleasant Valley Lane. The incident was said to have occurred outside, but Bennett made it inside were he finally collapsed. Bennett was transported to Vanderbilt Medical Center with extreme blood loss. Before Bennett was transported to Vanderbilt, Lt. Shannon Hunt of the Smith County Sheriff’s Department had a chance to speak with him. He asked him who cut his throat, and he allegedly stated, “Douglas Wilson.” Wilson was arrested and transported to Smith County Jail Facility for booking. Wilson was interviewed 12 hours after being in jail, due to him being intoxicated when he was arrested. During the interview, Wilson did allegedly admit to have cut Timothy Bennett’s throat.
The trial began on Tuesday, April 12, and lasted until Thursday night, April 14. After three days of listening to the State and the defense plead their cases, the jury retired to the jury room around 3:10 pm to begin their deliberation on Thursday. After about four hours of deliberation, the jury had reached a verdict.
The jury found Douglas McArthur Wilson not guilty of Attempted 1st Degree Murder, but found him guilty of attempted 2nd Degree Murder.
Wilson’s bond was revoked due to the crime being a Class B Felony. Wilson will remain in jail until his sentencing on August 1, 2016 at 1 p.m.
