All-inclusives? Aren’t those resorts where the drinks are watered down, the beaches are crowded and the accommodations are pretty minimal? Not really. The best thing about all-inclusive resorts might just be that this one-price vacation gives you peace of mind and eliminates wallet shock at check out.
What’s Included
Although it varies from resort to resort, all-inclusive rates typically include airport transfers, accommodations, meals, snacks, beverages (alcoholic and non-alcoholic), non-motorized water sports and evening entertainment. However, some things may not be included — such as golf, spa, premium liquor, Wi-Fi and a la carte restaurants. This is sometimes a surprise to those who expect everything to be included.
When It Makes Sense to Go All-Inclusive
All-inclusive resorts are not always the best value. It depends on the destination, the season and the type of traveler you are. Some destinations don’t lend themselves as readily to all-inclusives, especially islands that are easy to get around and offer a lot of restaurant choices. On these islands, you could just as easily stay in a resort that wasn’t all-inclusive and maybe even save money. One good example is Turks & Caicos which has so many resorts and restaurants that it doesn’t make sense to stay at the island’s only all-inclusive resort. Also, if you are an independent type who likes to explore and try out local restaurants, then staying at an all-inclusive could mean paying for things you aren’t really going to use.
Where the Best All-Inclusive Resorts Are Located
There is only one all-inclusive resort in the United States – Club Med Sandpiper Bay in Port St Lucie, Florida. Most of them are concentrated in Mexico and the Caribbean. Generally, the best all-inclusive resorts are in the touristy areas of the Caribbean where flights are common and the beaches are spectacular. Good examples are Riviera Maya in Mexico, Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic, Jamaica and Grand Bahama Island.
Bucket List Advice
All-inclusives are great if you don’t mind staying put at the resort for the vast majority of your time. Especially for vacationing families, the stress of planning and budgeting virtually disappears with a resort that includes everything from the meals to daytime activities. The takeaway? Do your research beforehand to check out the atmosphere (party-centric, family-friendly, or relaxed luxury) and features/amenities included in the rates in order find the best resort for your style.
Note: From Nashville, many nice all-inclusive resorts can be reached, often using non-stop charter flights. The charter flights are always included in the price.
