Smith County 4-H member Grace Harville has had a very busy spring and summer, competing on the regional, state, and even national level at 4-H and FCCLA competitions.
Grace’s busy schedule started as she represented Smith County 4-H at the Regional Public Speaking Contest in February, where she was the 9th Grade contest Champion Speaker. She went on to represent Smith County and the Central Region at the State Contest at State 4-H Congress in March, where she would finish 3rd by only one and half points.
Grace also started in the spring working on her presentation for Entrepreneurship for FCCLA. Grace’s presentation included a full pitch with how she would start and run her own restaurant, with flowcharts, table layouts, and even a menu. Grace took 1st place at the Tennessee FCCLA Convention in Entrepreneurship, earning her the right to represent Smith County and Tennessee at the National FCCLA Convention in San Diego, California. At the national convention in July, Grace was the Southern Region FCCLA National 1st place winner in Entrepreneurship.
While working on and competing with her Entrepreneurship presentation with FCCLA, Grace was also working on her portfolio for 4-H Food Sciences, which she submitted for state competition. Only the top 6 portfolios across the state are selected to attend State 4-H Round, where 4-H members can compete to be state winners in their project. Grace was selected as one of the Level I finalists for the Food Sciences project.
4-H members from across Tennessee gather at the University of Tennessee for State 4-H Roundup and All-Star Conference. The annual event, which took place July 25-29, 2016, recognized the outstanding project work and leadership accomplishments of senior high 4-H members.
Approximately 300 high school age 4-H’ers from across Tennessee met for several days on the UT Knoxville campus. 4-H’ers competed in projects such as communication and public speaking, livestock, computers and technology and photography for college scholarship money and trips to National 4-H Congress in Atlanta.
Grace was named the State Winner in the Level I Food Science Project. As a Level I State winner, Grace received the Horizon Award and a $500 college scholarship to the University of Tennessee.
Grace has had a very successful year with her 4-H and FCCLA projects, with lot of hard work and determination. Grace is the daughter of Jason and Lisa Harville of Pleasant Shade.
