Gordonsville and Smith County Playing in Football Jamborees

August 13, 2015

(Smith County Insider Press) While Smith County students are excited about the start of a new school year, student athletes are even more excited for the dividends that await them under the Friday night lights. Before the regular season kicks off next week, the final tune-up of the pre-season will take place this Friday in a jamboree.

Football jamborees can come in many sizes and forms. Two, four, or as many as eight teams meet for usually two quarters. Each quarter is played back-to-back in game-like situations. If there are kick-offs or punts they are not “live, full contact,” but rather half speed with no returns by the receivers.

Gordonsville High School will be hosting a jamboree this Friday night against Macon County High School beginning at 7:00 p.m. This will be the third class 4A team that coach Ron Marshall and his Tigers will face this pre-season. Gordonsville has already scrimmaged Dekalb County and Livingston Academy this pre-season. Marshall’s team faced stiff competition against these larger schools. However, they were played with the hopes of gaining some valuable playing experience for many of his younger players.

The jamboree will consist of both school’s junior varsity teams. They will be squaring off in the first two quarters while the main teams will battle one another in the final two quarters. Marshall suggested this week, due to a rash of injuries this pre-season, that his main team may not play the final two quarters. A couple of these injuries have been very costly. Two young men may miss part if not all of the season.

Smith County High School will be playing in a jamboree at Upperman this Friday against Jackson County.
