GHS FCCLA Donates to Smith County EMS- Bears For Babies Campaign

March 30, 2021

According to research through the CDC, during the COVID-19 pandemic the total number of emergency departments visits related to child abuse and neglect decreased, but the percentage of such visits resulting in hospitalization increased, compared to 2019.

After learning this information, Krista Bailey, a member of the Gordonsville High School FCLA Chapter, organized a “Bears for Babies” campaign. The intent was to collect stuffed animals for children that had been hospitalized. However, Krista learned that was a local need for these toys not by the hospital but by the Smith County Emergency Medical Service. According to Mr. Terry Givens, SCEMS, the stuffed animals are used to help children feel safe, secure, and relaxed while being transported in an ambulance. This enables the paramedics to better address the child’s medical needs. Children need medical transport for reasons other than abuse. They sustain injuries from car accidents, sports, playground equipment, falls and general play.

As a result of Krista Bailey’s FCCLA leadership skills, 76 stuffed animals were collected and donated to help the children of Smith County.  This is just one example of the service projects conducted by the GHS FCCLA Chapter.

Terry Givens and his coworkers were very appreciative of the stuffed animals. “Smith County EMS is grateful for the generous donation from GHS FCCLA. Children are often overwhelmed during traumatic events and these stuffed animals will be a source of comfort  for them.” – SCEMS Deputy Director, Terry Givens, AEMT

We are grateful for people such as the Smith County EMS employees and honored to be able to assist them through this donation.
