GHS FCCLA Campaign – No Need for Speed

June 11, 2018

Article submitted by Caleb Ward and Joseph West – Gordonsville High School FCCLA:

Each year in the United States, 9,557 people lose their lives in a traffic accident due to excessive speed.

Using this statistic, the Gordonsville High School FCCLA Chapter developed and implemented a project, “No Need for Speed,” to increase awareness and help save the lives of our peers, neighbors, and family members.

Other statistics used to help increase awareness include:

  • In the U.S., drivers pay approximately 6 billion dollars in speeding fines annually.
  • 35% of all fatal crashes are a result of speeding while driving.
  • In both age categories 15 – 20 and 21 – 24, 37% of the drivers involved in a fatal crash were speeding.
  • Each day, approximately 112,000 drivers are ticketed for speeding.
  • Almost 41 million speeding tickets are issued in the U.S. each year.
  • Teens are more likely to speed if they are the primary owner of the car rather than driving the family car.
  • Half of all fatal crashes involving 16 year-old drivers with 3 or more passengers are speed
    related.
  • The 10 Deadliest Days for Teen Drivers: June 21 and 27, July 4 and 8, August 1, 2, 14 and 29, September 26, and November 24.

We encourage everyone to join our campaign. Look for our banner and remember there is “No
Need for Speed” – Arrive Alive.

Caleb Ward and Joseph West have progressed to the national level of competition with their “No Need for Speed” project. Ward and West will present this project at the FCCLA National Leadership Conference in Atlanta, Georgia on June 29, 2018.
