Gordonsville High School Band member Ayla Manor recently competed with Southwind Drum & Bugle Corps International in Knoxville, Tennessee, on Saturday, July 11, 2019.
The corps will perform and compete at 18 locations across 11 states in the Southeast, Northeast, and Midwest between July 6 and August 10, 2019.

MOBILE, AL – Ayla Manor, a resident of Hickman, Tennessee will be performing with Southwind Drum & Bugle Corps this summer as part of the Drum Corps International Open Class circuit.
Manor, a member of the Mellophone section, is one of over 120 members chosen for the drum corps after an exhaustive audition process earlier this winter.
Manor has attended monthly weekend rehearsals throughout the spring, which will lead into the corps’ competitive season this summer. By the time their competitive season is complete, members of Southwind, who are between the ages of 14 and 21, will have logged over 600 hours of preparation time for their performances.
The corps will perform and compete at 18 locations across 11 states in the Southeast, Northeast and Midwest between July 6-Aug. 10, culminating in the DCI World Championships in Indianapolis, Ind. Locally, Southwind will perform at Drums Across the Smokies-Knoxville, TN on July 11. Information and tickets for each event can be found at http://www.dci.org.
Drum and bugle corps, which stems from the tradition of military marching units, is an activity that combines high level musical performance with the physical demands of athletes. The performance groups, which consist of brass, percussion and color guard members, compete internationally during summer competitions all over North America, Europe, South America and Asia through the umbrella of Drum Corps International.
Southwind Drum & Bugle Corps, based in Mobile, Alabama, was established in 1980. An Open Class drum corps, Southwind previously won two international championships in their division in 1991 and 1992. They were the DCI Southeastern Champions for Open Class in 2015 and 2016, and, for the past two seasons, have been Drum Corps International Open Class finalists.
