Food for Thought: Walk Across Tennessee challenge reaches halfway point

May 7, 2019

The following article was submitted by Mary Parker Draper, Smith County Extension Agent:

We are halfway through our Walk Across Tennessee Challenge! Walk Across Tennessee is a program that persuades and motivates people of all ages to make that most important change…to get started.

To celebrate our halfway point, we awarded the team with the most creative name to the The Young and The Breathless. We also awarded Most Outstanding Team Captain to Cassie Brown for getting her team’s miles turned in on time every week and encouraging her team and others to walk.

This year we have 26 teams participating in the Walk Across Tennessee Challenge! In 2018 we had 11. We wanted to recognize a new team this year, so we randomly selected one to honor. The Pavilion Pacers was chosen as this year’s Rookie of the Year.

All 26 teams are making a great accomplishment walking “across Tennessee.” The teams for this year’s Walk Across Tennessee challenge are Night Owls Team 1, 2, 3, and 4, The Young and the Breathless, Chicks with Kicks, Walking for the Cure, High Steppers, Dog Walkers, Docs Monkeys, Hackett’s Discount Drugs, CIA (Christians in Action), Happy Feet, Smith County Drug Prevention Coalition, Union Heights Redcoats, Survive and Advance, Smith County Drug Center-Red, Smith County Drug Center-White, Smith County Board of Education, Mamas on a Mission, The Stepping Out Gang, Money$Bags, Pavilion Pace Makers, Pavilion Pacers, Pavilion Panthers, and Pavilion Pulse.

Thank you to our wonderful Walk Across Tennessee program sponsors: DTC, Smith County Health Department, Smith County Drug Center, Sanderson Funeral Home, Citizens Bank, Powell and Meadows, Riverview Regional, Blackwell Reality and Auction, Hackett’s Discount Drugs, Wilson Bank & Trust, Gordonsville Drugs, Exit Rocky Top Realty, and Smith County Drug Prevention Coalition. Each participant will receive a Walk Across Tennessee T-shirt because of our sponsors’ donations. Thanks! Keep Walking, Be Healthy!
