Food for Thought: Hydration

January 27, 2023

Most of us know the significance of staying hydrated. However, we may not think of staying hydrated as readily in the winter months. Fluids are essential for your body year-round. Water keeps our bodies healthy in numerous ways that we may not even realize.

Drinking water:

· Improves skin elasticity and moisture of our skin

· Improves our focus and memory

· Improves mood

· May reduce certain types of cancers, such as breast and bowel

· Assists in lessening congestion

· Fuels muscles

· Lubricates and cushions joints

· Protects your spinal cord and other delicate tissues

· Keeps your temperature normal

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), U.S. youth who drink less water tended to drink less milk, eat less fruits and vegetables, drink more sugar-sweetened beverages, eat more fast food, and get less physical activity. Drinking plenty of water is important for all age groups.

Below are a few tips to help you drink more water:

· Choose water when dining out. You will not only have chosen a healthier option, but you will also save money.

· Carry a water bottle with you for easy access when you are out.

· Try adding fruit to your water. This can help improve the taste.

· Keep a covered pitcher of water in the refrigerator where you can see it when you open the refrigerator door.

We must continuously refuel our body with the water it uses. Dehydration can happen at any time, even in the winter months.
