Food for Thought: Fitness Shoes

July 29, 2021

Did you know the average fitness shoe is only made to last about 350 to 500 miles? While it may be tempting not to part with a good pair of walking or running shoes from both an economical and comfort standpoint, with each step you are breaking down their cushioning and support.

Even though walkers are not putting as much pressure on their shoes as runners, a walker is still unlikely to receive good support and cushioning past 500 miles. If you are walking 30 minutes a day or an average of three to four hours a week, replace your shoes every six months. If you are walking 60 minutes a day or an average of seven hours a week, replace your shoes every three months. An individual’s weight is a factor when considering the rate your shoes will wear. There are other signs to look for when it is time to get new shoes:• Your heel is worn down on one side or the bottom tread pattern is worn down on one side. • You are experiencing more pain in your feet after a workout.• Your shoes feel less supportive. • You feel more tired than usual or get different aches and pains after a workout.

Help your shoes last longer with these tips:• Save your walking shoes exclusively for exercise time. • Air out your shoes between workouts.• If you wash your shoes, use gentle soap and cold water, and air dry them. • Rotate between multiple pairs of walking shoes for workouts.
