We have all heard of the term road rage. However, we may not be using the term in the correct context.
According to California State police services, if you have ever been tailgated, passed in a no passing zone, or cut off by another vehicle, then you have been the victim of an aggressive driver. Aggressive driving usually involves traffic violations, fines, and points on your driving record.
When a traffic incident accelerates into a more severe condition, it is considered road rage. Road rage is a criminal offense when it results in violence or a collision.
Factors that contribute to aggressive driving include a greater number of miles driven per day, busy roads, and stressful employment situations. California State gives these tips to avoid becoming an aggressive driver:
· Do not take your frustrations out on other drivers.
· Plan ahead and allow time for delays.
· Focus on your driving. Yelling or honking your horn will not get you to your destination faster.
Anyone may experience aggressive driving. If you get upset with another driver or have unintentionally caused another driver to be angry, try to defuse the situation. You may try waving to the other driver or mouthing that you’re sorry. This will help to keep everyone safe. If these tactics do not work and you are concerned for your safety, pull over and call the police.
