(Smith County Insider Press) Carthage, Tenn. – The first winter storm of 2016 has not been very friendly to Smith County. The National Weather Service declared a Winter Storm Warning for Smith County until 6 p.m. Wednesday, January 20. The Smith County Sheriff’s Department, Smith County EMS, and the Smith County Rescue Squad have answered countless calls in the past 12 hours due to weather related incidents. Officials are advising to stay off of all roadways unless it is an extreme emergency. Multiple vehicle accidents have been reported all over Smith County and on I-40.
If you have to travel in these conditions, please use caution and be on the look out for Emergency Service Vehicles. TDOT has been scraping and salting most of the major highways in Smith County, but a majority of the back roads are still dangerous to travel.
