On March 8, 2021, Lt. Steve Babcock of the Smith County Sheriff’s Office investigated an allegation of drug use at Smith County EMS Station 1 in Carthage.
Upon arrival to the EMS station, Lt. Babcock asked EMS employee Brandon Lee McGowan to come outside. McGowan agreed and went out. While outside of the EMS station, Lt. Babcock Mirandized McGowan. McGowan emptied his pockets and gave Lt. Babcock six alprazolam pills and a folded piece of paper containing a substance believed to be heroin.
McGowan was charged with Simple Possession of Schedule I and booked into the Smith County Jail. McGowan is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
