Wildfires across the Smoky Mountains are making their presence known hundreds of miles away here in Smith County.
Across social media, residents have mentioned the hazy skies and the smell of smoke in the air. The Smith County Sheriff’s Office has received over 20 calls today regarding the smoke.
Much of Tennessee is experiencing drought conditions. The worst of the drought is being felt across southeastern areas of the state, which is where wildfires are currently ongoing.
While the fires causing the hazy sky here at home are well away from us, residents should be very cautious and not do anything to spark a fire here, such as tossing cigarette butts on the ground or burning anything outdoors.
TEMA declared a Level 3 State of Emergency on Thursday as a result of the wildfires and ongoing drought conditions.
