Donkey Softball game entertains crowd at the Smith County Fair

July 3, 2019

On Tuesday evening, an excited crowd gathered at Russell Nixon Arena for the new Donkey Softball event at the Smith County Fair.

The sports phenomenon of Donkey Softball is nearly impossible to explain. As the game began, it was clear that the audience was having fun, the players were having some trouble, and the donkeys…? They were just not having it.

The two teams, one made up of Bonnell employees and the other of Graphic Packaging employees, went head-to-head in a softball game with a pretty big twist… all the players had to be accompanied at all times by a donkey.

In order to be considered safe on base or successfully tag another player out, players had to be in riding position atop their donkey.

Hilarity ensued as players from both teams pulled and tugged at the stubborn donkeys, struggled to get on top of them, or on occasion dodged kicks when the donkeys had enough.

At one point, one of the smallest donkeys took off at a sprint across the field with his player trailing behind, unfortunately causing an automatic out.

Given the smiles on everyone’s faces and the shouts of laughter from both the audience and players alike, it’s safe to say that this unconventional game was a home run!
