Harvest may be on the horizon for traditional row crops in the area, but the season is winding down for watermelons. George McDonald, owner of Catesa Farms in Riddleton, Tennessee, teamed up with Farm Credit Mid-America and Rural 1st® last week to make sure watermelons left in his fields didn’t go to waste. Melons gleaned from George’s fields were donated to Second Harvest of Middle Tennessee in hopes of bringing a sweet and refreshing treat to families who rely on the food bank. The event was part of Farm Credit Mid-America’s Farms to Food Banks program, which bridges the gap between local farmers and food banks by providing fresh produce and protein to enhance shelf-stable meals. Since its inception in 2016, the program has supplemented more than 4.4 million meals.
