(Smith County Insider Press) Gordonsville, Tenn. – Smith County native, Sarah Dillard Collins, is not you’re ordinary young woman. Her ambitious goals and strong work ethic has led her to owning her own traveling boutique. Read below how she got started:
In August of 2012, I was an eager 18 year old college freshman ready to go on a mission trip to Haiti. I had just recently met the man who would later become my husband, and he was going on the trip, as well. The only worry was the cost. Praying about what to do about the almost $4,000 to raise, I realized that God can do anything with a willing heart and a little bit of talent. I then began my small business, “Stitches for Haiti,” sewing pocket tee’s and making headbands. I loved making things for people and explaining to them where the money from purchases was going to at different festivals, craft sales, and also through Facebook orders.
Sadly and thankfully (ironic, but true!), the mission trip fell through, but we knew it was God’s will for us not to go. Then, it hit me that I did not want to stop making and selling! God had given me a passion for meeting new people and creating one-of-a kind goodies for them. So, one night, I decided not to stop. I loved seeing new faces and making other’s days with fun products that boosts self-confidence. I had to come with a name for my new endeavor that meant something: Poppie’s, named for my grandfather whom I adored!
I started out with small home trunk shows hosted by dear friends, and then gradually grew from quaint, local craft sales, to huge barn sales and festivals! My inventory grew from only handmade items, to adding jewelry, to eventually adding quality boutique brand clothing. Our set-up grew from a tent that fit in the back of my 1997 4-Runner, to a restored 1968 Airstream “rolling boutique” that God graciously blessed us with this past July. My husband, Hunter, and I get the opportunity to travel all over Tennessee, meet new people, and have Poppie’s as my job while still a college senior at TTU.
