Last week, the burn ban that had been in effect for Smith County, as well as the cities of South Carthage and Gordonsville, was lifted.
However, the Tennessee Division of Forestry does require a burn permit for Open Air Burning until May 15. You may obtain a permit locally by calling 615-683-6361, or by visiting burnsafetn.org to obtain a permit online.
If you live within the cities of South Carthage and Gordonsville, you will still need to contact City Hall in the city in which you live to obtain a burn permit.
Please note that the city of Carthage bans burning year-round.
