Burke’s 5 touchdowns lead Owls to 39-7 win over Cannon

The Owls were able to get a big win over Cannon County on Friday night, winning 39-7 on the road.

Both teams started off with failed drives, despite Smith County driving to near midfield. The Owls were forced to punt.

Three plays later the Owls defense was able to get on the scoreboard with fumble recovery scoop and score late in the first quarter by DJ Burke but a missed PAT only put the Owls up 6-0.

The Owls were able to get the ball back on the kickoff following a muffed kickoff return, but the Owls were unable to get anything going and their field goal attempt was blocked by Cannon County.

The Owls offense was able to get going again late in the second quarter, with Burke running it in from a yard out for a touchdown, and Smith County’s two point conversion failed to make the score 12-0 with 1:29 left in the half.

The Owls were able to extend their lead in the second half, as DJ Burke ran it in from a couple yards out with 4:29 left in the third to make the score 19-0, but Cannon County was able to find the endzone themselves with 10 seconds left in the quarter to make it 19-7.

Cannon County recovered their onside kick attempt and gain a couple first downs, but a fumble that was scooped up and penalties gave the Owls the ball at the 30 yard line.

Burke ran it in for a score to take a 26-6 lead. The Owls were able to force a couple turnovers in the fourth, with Burke scoring his 5th touchdown of the night from a couple yards out and Ryne Martin scoring a 60 yard touchdown with 25 seconds left in the game to wrap the Owls game up at 39-7.
