(Smith County Insider Press) Difficult, Tenn. – On Wednesday, November 23, Smith County 911 received a call reporting a huge brush/grass fire near several homes around 187 Difficult Road. Defeated Creek Fire Department was dispatched to the scene.
The blaze could be seen from miles away as authorities headed toward the scene. After a few members of the Defeated Creek Fire Department arrived on scene, they immediately called for backup from the Tennessee Forestry Department and Smith County Central District Fire Department.
Firefighters were able to keep the fire from damaging any homes in the area. Due to heavy wind, the fire spread rapidly across a hillside, causing several fallen trees and brush piles to engulf in flames. The area was not accessible by the fire trucks, so firefighters had to use ATVs and a Humvee Brush Truck.
The Forestry Department arrived on scene with a bulldozer to help control and extinguish the fire.
It took firefighters over 5 hours to extinguish the blaze. The cause of the fire is unknown.
