(Smith County Insider Press) Gordonsville, Tenn. – On Thursday, July 20, the Southside Lions Club in Gordonsville presented Lion James Robert Bass with the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award.
Lions Clubs world-wide recognize outstanding individuals by bestowing on them an award that is named for its founder, Melvin Jones. This award is the highest form of recognition and embodies humanitarian ideas consistent with the nature and purpose of Lionism. The recipient of this award becomes a model of exemplary service to his club and the community which it serves. The Melvin Jones Fellowship Award is a nation-wide award. The Melvin Jones Fellowship (MJF) recognizes donations of US$1,000. It is the backbone of LCIF, providing 75 percent of the foundation’s revenue. As recognition of humanitarian work, an MJF is an honor presented to those who donate $1,000 to LCIF or to people for whom a donation was made by others.
Who is Melvin Jones?
In 1917, Melvin Jones, a 38-year-old Chicago business leader, told members of his local business club they should reach beyond business issues and address the betterment of their communities and the world. Jones’ group, the Business Circle of Chicago, agreed.
After contacting similar groups around the United States, an organizational meeting was held on June 7, 1917, in Chicago, Illinois, USA. The new group took the name of one of the invited groups, the “Association of Lions Clubs,” and thus began the rich tradition of service that Lions Clubs are known for around the world.
