(Smith County Insider Press) South Carthage, Tenn. – On Monday night, February 13, at the special called Board of Education Meeting, the board of education voted to split Gordonsville Elementary and New Middleton School. New Middleton School will now host grades Kindergarten through second grade. Gordonsville Elementary will host grades third through sixth.
The meeting began with discussion regarding the two options, splitting the schools or a capacity cap. After much discussion, Robin Moore (District 1) made a motion to allow the Director of Schools, Barry Smith, to make the decision to either split or cap. Moore’s motion was seconded by Tina Gantenbein (District 8).
Moore’s motion failed, receiving 3 yes votes and 5 no votes.

At that time, the Board Chairman, Brian Smith (District 7), made a motion that they accept the K-2/3-6 split. The motion was seconded by Robin Moore (District 1). The motion passed, receiving 5 yes votes, 2 no votes, and 1 abstained.
