How long has it been since you’ve had a fresh egg? No, I don’t mean an egg in a carton with an expiration date that hasn’t been reached yet. I mean an egg that was laid in, say, the past two or three days. If you taste such an egg, you’ll readily distinguish the difference between it and what you can buy at the grocery stores.
One of the most enjoyable reasons to have chickens is the regular supply of delicious farm fresh eggs. Attend the Smith County 4-H Poultry Show and Sale that will take place this Thursday, September 29th at the Smith County Ag Center and you will have the opportunity to enjoy fresh eggs every morning!
Each spring, 4-H members of Smith County have the opportunity to become involved in the 4-H Chick Chain. This activity allows 4-H’ers to receive, one-day-old baby chicks in late March. The 4-H’er is responsible for feeding and caring for the chicks. Then, on September 29th, the 4-H’er will select their three best pullets and bring them to the County 4-H Poultry Show and Sale. This year we will have pens of Barred Rock and Buff Orpington hens for sale. There may also be a few roosters for sale as well.
The judging of the pullets will begin at 6:00 PM. The auction will follow shortly after. All proceeds from the sale will go directly to the 4-H member to help with their expenses in raising the chicks.
Eggs are a wonderful and delicious source of nutrition for your family. But beware: Once you’ve had farm fresh eggs, you’ll never want to go back to store bought again!
