4-H News: Smith County 4-H’ers compete in Archery Jamboree

Robert Purtee, Lucian Carrick, Hayden High, Charity Borck, Owen Meeks, Jack Blair, Andrew Blair, Rylan Taylor, Levi Ferrell, Abby Malone, Carson Meeks, Lauren Gregory, Zachary Smiljanic, Isaac Borck, Abby Purtee, Bailey Chapman, Hannah Borck, Gary Claywell, and Spencer Meeks prepare for the contest with Volunteer Coach Kenny Claywell and Nathan Purtee.

Nearly thirty Smith County 4-H’ers have spent the past eight weeks honing their skills and practicing archery in preparation to compete in the State Archery Jamboree, which was held Friday and Saturday, April 26 and 27, 2019, in Cookeville, Tennessee.

The following twenty-two 4-H members competed against almost 500 competitors in the largest contest ever.

In the Genesis division, Robert Purtee, Lucian Carrick, Hayden High, Charity Borck, Owen Meeks, Jack Blair, Andrew Blair, Rylan Taylor, and Levi Ferrell competed in the Junior Division. Competing in the Junior High division was Abby Malone, Carson Meeks, Lauren Gregory, Zachary Smiljanic, Isaac Borck, and Abby Purtee. Bailey Chapman, Hannah Borck, Gary Claywell, and Spencer Meeks competed in the Senior High division. Competing in the Compound division was Greg Dixon and Jude Laurie in the Junior Division and Walela Hartman in the Junior High division.

Spencer Meeks placed 3rd and Gary Claywell placed 10th in the Senior High Genesis Division, and Greg Dixon placed 9th and Jude Laurie placed 10th in the Hunter Compound Junior Division. Robert Purtee and Jude Laurie also placed 3rd in Junior Skillathon, Abby Purtee placed 2nd in Junior High Skillathon, and Spencer Meeks placed 6th in Senior High Skillathon.

More importantly Smith County 4-H’ers exhibited exemplary character and discipline and represented our county well.

We would like to especially thank our volunteer leaders, Kenny Claywell, Nathan Purtee, and John Laurie for the time and effort spent training this group.

The 4-H Shooting Sports program develops safe shooting habits in youth ages 8-19. Students practice under the guidance of certified instructors and coaches who have received over 15 hours of training in the areas of safety, techniques, coaching and youth development.
