The lights illuminating the summer sky can be seen from Gordonsville. An aroma of smoked barbecue and freshly made funnel cakes fills the air. The sounds of children laughing, rides mechanisms moving and music playing can be heard from the farthest parking lot at Smith County Middle School.
Indeed, the Smith County Fair is once again in full swing.
Monday night marked the beginning of the six day fair, which will run through Saturday, July 30.
The opening ceremony featured a performance by the Gordonsville High School Band. Shortly thereafter, a veterans flag retirement took place at the Russell Nixon Arena.
Other opening night events included a meet and greet with WSMV Channel 4’s Snow Bird, Miss Fairest of the Fair pageants for both the 16-20 and 13-15 age groups, respectively, Kids Olympics, an all new auto extrication event featuring the Smith County Rescue Squad led by Sonny Carter, and a $500 cash giveaway.

In addition to the numerous events scheduled, there are nightly live musical performances, a wide variety of food vendors appealing to any and all appetites, business and church booths, and of course, carnival rides — with more rides featured than in previous years, plus much, much more!
