2023 Squirrel Hunt set for February 18, 2023

Mark your calendar for the 2023 Squirrel Hunt, which will take place on Saturday, February 18, 2023.

Check-in your two-man team at Citizens Bank in Gordonsville, located at 530 Gordonsville Highway in Gordonsville, Tennessee. 

The registration fee is $20 per team. There will also be an optional $5 side pot for the biggest squirrel. The hunt pays out 100% payout with 1st, 2nd, and 3rd receiving payouts.

You can sign up in person at S&K Sporting Goods or by calling Brandon Hale at 615-489-7519. Registration can be paid online via Venmo, cash app or paypal.

You must be signed up by Friday, February 17, 2023, and must be back at check-in by 4:00 p.m. on February 18, 2023.

Each team will weigh in 5 squirrels, and the team with the most weight will win!

Smith County Playhouse presents Mary Poppins

Tickets are on sale NOW for Mary Poppins the Broadway Musical presented by the Smith County Playhouse at the Smith County High School Auditorium. The title is sponsored by Citizens Bank! The show runs from March 10-19. The Smith County Playhouse is a childrens theatre made up of students from all of Smith County.

They are using an online system that allows theater viewers to select their seats. Tickets can be purchased in three ways:

1) Buy directly from the website. This is the preferred option. The link is http://smithcounty.booktix.com/

2) Scan the QR code on any of the Mary Poppins posters around town.

3) Come to the SCHS auditorium beginning an hour before showtime and select tickets at the door.

Food for Thought: Chocolate Extravaganza February 14th

Chocolate is a staple for Valentine’s Day in my book. What is better than chocolate? Homemade chocolate!

This Valentine’s Day why not treat your loved one or yourself to a box of homemade chocolate goodies? On Tuesday, February 14th from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. the Smith County Family and Community Education Clubs (FCE) will again be hosting their Annual Chocolate Extravaganza!

This year FCE members will pre-package boxes by the dozen. A box of assorted brownies, cookies, candies, etc. is only $5.00.

Proceeds will benefit the Smith County Rescue Squad and FCE projects.

We hope to see you at Smith County Chamber of Commerce on February 14th!

Caramel Pie

2 cups sugar

2 cups water

1 stick margarine

1 teaspoon vanilla

2 tablespoons flour

4 egg yolks, beaten

Dash of salt

Heat 1 cup of sugar in a heavy skillet on low heat and let sugar melt until dark brown. Then, combine 1 additional cup of sugar with all other ingredients. Slowly pour mixture into caramelized sugar and cook until thick. Put into baked pie shell. Beat egg whites until stiff peaks form and top pie. Place in oven until lightly brown. Southern Home & Garden Expo Returns to Lebanon February 10-11 for the 30th Year

LEBANON, TENN. – Wilson Bank & Trust’s 30th annual home show will return to the Farm Bureau Expo Center in February with a variety of exhibitors ready to help with all types of home-related projects.

The Southern Home & Garden Expo takes place Friday, February 10 and Saturday, February 11. With free admission, the event provides access to dozens of Middle Tennessee businesses in the home improvement industry, featuring more than 100 exhibitors. This year, special guests Brooke and Brice Gilliam from the hit television show “Making Modern with Brooke + Brice,” featured on the Magnolia Network and streaming on Discovery +, and HBO Max will be joining the event. Brice is a native to Lebanon and graduated from Lebanon High School. Entirely self-taught, Brooke and Brice Gilliam made a name for themselves when they took on non-traditional roles with Brooke as builder and Brice as designer catching the attention of Chip and Joanna Gaines who backed their own design show, “Making Modern with Brooke and Brice.”

Prizes will be given away at this year’s Expo, including a $500 MasterCard gift card from Wilson Bank & Trust, $2,500 in Benjamin Moore paint products from Fakes & Hooker, Four Adirondack chairs from Kauffman Farms, plus much more. Expo hours are 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on February 10, and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. February 11. A food court area will be located inside the expo center. WBT also offers special financing rates that are only available during the event as well as competitive deposit products.

Habitat for Humanity sponsors Father-Daughter Sweetheart Night on February 25th

After missing two years due to the COVID pandemic, Smith County Habitat for Humanity, Inc is pleased to bring back its 2023 version of the popular Father-Daughter Sweetheart Night on Saturday, February 25, 2023 at 6:00 pm at the Ag Center.

This dinner and dance will give dads and daughters (or grandfathers and granddaughters) the chance to enjoy a memorable date evening. Costs of the event is $50.00 for a father and daughter, with $20 for an additional daughter.

50’s Sweetheart Sock Hop at the Ag Center POSTPONED

UPDATED – 2-8-23 —– The 50’s Sock Hop Event has been postponed. A future date will be announced soon.

The Smith County Events Committee will host a 50’s Sweetheart Sock Hop at the Smith County Agricultural Center on Saturday, February 18, 2023 from 5-8 p.m. Get ready to have a rockin’ good time at this 18+ event. Come out and shake, rattle and roll. It will be a fun-filled evening for couples, friends or just a personal night out.

Music provided by DJ Troy. Appetizers, light snacks and milkshakes will be available. There will also be.a silent auction featuring adventures for couples, friends and small groups.

Early bird tickets are on sale now until February 18th — $50 for a couple or $30 individual. Tickets at the door will be $35 each. You can purchase online. Check out the Smith County Events facebook page for more information.

All proceeds will benefit the Back 2 School Bash and the goal of providing free school supplies for all Smith County students and free events at the Halloween Bash.

Stephens Center Fundraising Event to be held on February 11th, 2023

The Stephens Center will host a fundraising event on February 11, 2023 at Saltbox Inn in Cookeville, TN. The fun evening will include dancing, drinks and dinner. The fundraiser will help support the mission of the Stephens Center. Tickets can be purchased through Eventbrite for $50.

The mission of Stephens Center is to promote healthy, nurturing families through appropriate home-visiting, parenting classes, and community education programs. The Stephens Center is accredited by both Healthy Families America and the National Exchange Club. The Center is also licensed by the Tennessee Department of Children’s Services. The Stephens Center provides services to children and parents in Overton, Putnam, Cumberland, DeKalb, Macon, Clay, Pickett, Jackson, Smith, and White Counties.

The Stephens Center, a non-profit, 501( c )3 family support agency, was established in 1988 by Anna Stephens in memory of her late husband, Holland J. Stephens. 

Bridge the Gap Community Outreach on January 24th

ReGroup Recovery will host the Bridge the Gap Community Outreach on Tuesday, January 24, 2023 at the Smith County Chamber of Commerce from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m.

ReGroup is a Faith-Inspired recovery initiative serving the people of Smith County and surrounding counties in Tennessee. They strivee to serve the needs of those struggling in active addiction through meetings, accountability, and other services. ReGroup Recovery operates out of the UCHRA Office under the direction of Sammy Allen. His team also includes Recovery Coaching, Intake Coordinator, Peer Services and Community Outreach.

GHS Clubs host Empty Bowls Project to benefit local food pantries

Gordonsville High School FCCLA, Art Club and S.A.D.D. clubs will host an Empty Bowls and Lead to Feed event on Saturday, January 21, 2023 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.

Individuals, families and groups can can make a pottery bowl and/or purchase some soup to help feed the hungry. All proceeds from the Empty Bowls Project and Lead to Feed Soup Sale will benefit local food banks.

The Empty Bowls Project will begin at 10:00 a.m. and continue until 2:00 p.m. During this time, your family or group can make pottery bowls in the Gordonsville Art Room. The cost to make a bowl is $10 per artist. Each pottery class will begin on the hour. Sign up quickly to reserve your space!

If you come to make pottery during the Empty Bowls Project, you can also take home dinner for your family at the Lead to Feed Soup Sale. GHS FCCLA is planning to cook up plenty of delicious soup that will be available for $7 per quart.

You can choose potato soup, or taco soup. All soup will be available for pickup during pottery class times.
