Gordonsville High School Football 2020 season preview
The Gordonsville Tigers will look to bounce back from what was a down year compared to their recent successes. The Tigers went 3-7 in the regular season, but made it to the third round of the playoffs before losing to South Pitt 40-0. Part of the reason for the Tigers struggles in 2019 was a large number of injuries among their skill positions, which caused for a number of younger players to gain some experience. The offensive and defensive lines may be one of the Tigers biggest question marks and it will be a storyline early in the season to see how well the Tigers can fill in their holes on the line.
With the coronavirus pandemic taking away spring practice and changing the way teams have been able to prepare, the Gordonsville High School Football 2020 Tigers will need to hope that the experience their younger players got last year can make up for some of the lack of practice that was available.

GHS Cheer Camp set for July 13, 14, & 16, 2020
The Gordonsville High School Cheerleaders plan to host a Cheer Camp this summer on July 13, 14, and 16 at New Middleton Elementary School. Camp will be held from 6:00 – 7:30 p.m. each night.
The cost to participate is $40, and the camp is open to students in kindergarten through 8th Grade.
Each camper will receive a t-shirt. Camp is limited to 50 campers, so register today!
Instruction will be provided by the GHS Cheerleaders.

UPDATE: Coach Bussell and Coach Jenkins Soccer Youth Skills Camp set for July 6-8, 2020 is canceled
Update: This event has been canceled.
This summer, Coach Bussell and Coach Jenkins, head coaches of the Smith County High School Soccer programs, will host a Soccer Youth Skills Camp on July 6, 7, and 8, from 9:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. each day.
The Youth Skills Camp is open to children in kindergarten through 8th grade for the 2020-2021 school year.
The cost to participate is $40, which includes a camp soccer ball.
During the SCHS Soccer Youth Skills Camp…
- Players will learn individual and team skills appropriate to their age and skill level.
- Players will learn in a fun environment with players in the same age group.
- Players will be given instruction to help them increase their skill level and
- understanding of the game
- The camp will emphasize individual skills and how to apply them to the team
- setting
- Parents are welcome to watch and talk to coaches about the game.
All players are required to wear shin guards and cleats at all times, and to bring a soccer ball.
Registration is due by Friday, June 19, 2020, to receive a camp soccer ball.

Smith County Youth Football and Cheerleading Signup Information – May 2020
Smith County Youth Football and Cheerleading will be having signups in the parking lot of the Carthage City Park on Tuesday, May 12, 2020, from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. and on Saturday, May 16, 2020 and Saturday, May 23, 2020, from 9:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m., weather permitting.
We will have tables set up to come get paperwork and take it back to your vehicle to fill out. We will size each player individually and disinfect accordingly before sizing the next child. We will be following the Social Distancing guidelines during these signups until further notice.
Before the start of practice in July, we will need a copy of child’s birth certificate (no mother’s copy) and an up to date physical.

TSSAA cancels remaining events for current school year

With the Governor’s announcement of school closure for the remainder of the school year, all remaining TSSAA events for 2019-20, including all spring sports and the postponed BlueCross Basketball Championships, are cancelled.
This is an unprecedented time across our state and country, and we do not make this decision lightly. We thank all of the participants, their coaches, administrators, parents, and everyone else who has dedicated a tremendous amount of time, passion, and effort to high school athletics, especially these affected events.
To our senior participants – we thank you for everything you have done for your schools and communities and wish you the very best in your bright futures. This is difficult, but the lessons you’ve learned and friendships you’ve made through high school activities will last your lifetime. We look forward to the resumption of high school athletics during the 2020-21 school year, and will continue work on those events at this time. The TSSAA thanks everyone involved for their patience and understanding throughout this process.
Information will be given to member schools regarding summer athletic activities in regards to the sports calendar at a date in the near future.

Smith County High School football players commit to college teams, military service

Last month, the friends and family of six Smith County High School football players gathered in the Smith County High School gymnasium to celebrate the players’ accomplishments and future plans.
Three players signed on with college teams, two shared their plans to join the military, and one committed to serving in the police force.
In a short ceremony, Smith County High School football coach Scott Murray commended his players for their character, work ethic, leadership skills, and academic performance. He described them as the “total package” as he expressed his pride.
Each student was given the opportunity to tell the audience about his future plans and express gratitude to the people who helped him along the way.
Jaden Apple-Gibbs signed on to play football at Greenville University in Greenville, Illinois.
John Ross Hord committed to play football at the University of the Cumberlands in Williamsburg, Kentucky.
Cameron Spivey will continue his football career at Maryville College in Maryville, Tennessee.
Kobe Williams plans to join the Air Force.
Joey Gantenbein will enlist in the Navy.
Chris Cunningham, whose injuries prevented him from joining the Army as he initially planned, will join the police force after he graduates.
Coach Murray also acknowledged Jared Grisham, who could not attend the ceremony because he was attending a military signing event on the same day.
Coach Murray told his players that he was glad to see that they have found their future homes, but he also reminded them that they will always have a special place in Owl Nation. “Your home will always be here,” Murray reassured the seniors.
Congratulations to these exceptional students! We look forward to seeing all the great things you will accomplish in the future.

Smith County Little League launches new website; activities suspended until April 11
Although Smith County Little League Baseball/Softball has suspended all activities until April 11, 2020, the new Little League website is up and running!
If you have any pictures of your player’s team in action last year, feel free to message Smith County Little League on Facebook so that your pictures can be added to the website.

Smith County Little League Baseball/Softball has suspended all activities until April 11th. The final tryout that was originally scheduled for Saturday, March 14th will now be held on April 11th. This will not affect the start of our LL season as it was set to begin April 19th. Please continue to sign up online if you have not signed up yet. Smith County High School Baseball and Softball Strikes Out Tobacco!
CARTHAGE, Tenn. – The Smith County High School Baseball and Softball teams recently made the pledge to “Strike Out Tobacco!”
Coach Connie Holder and Coach Lynus Martin and their teams each signed a pledge form promising not to use ANY tobacco or electronic cigarette (vape) products.
Once signed, the Tennessee Department of Health, in conjunction with TNSTRONG (a youth-led initiative to take down tobacco in Tennessee), sent both coaches and their teams a “We Struck out Tobacco” banner to be hung at the school.
As a reward for their tobacco-free leadership role, they will be receiving a TNSTRONG five- gallon bucket filled with practice baseballs and softballs.

Registration for Jr. Pro Basketball at Defeated Elementary School now underway
Registration for Defeated Elementary School Jr. Pro Basketball for the 2019-2020 season is now underway!
The fee to participate in Jr. Pro Basketball is $40 per child.
Draft (coaches only) will be held on January 12, 2020. Practices start January 25, and games start February 22. The season will be over by March 21, 2020. No teams play every night.
Only registration forms postmarked by January 3, 2020, will be accepted.

GHS Cheer places in Smoky Mountain Mid-South Regional Cheerleading Competition, earns bid to compete nationally

On December 7, 2019, the Gordonsville High School Varsity Cheerleading squad competed in the Smoky Mountain Mid-South Regional Cheerleading Competition.
They competed in the game day division which highlights the aspects of traditional cheerleading. Each squad performed a routine consisting of two band dances and two crowd leading cheers.
The GHS cheerleaders came in 4th overall and earned an invitation to compete at the ESPN Wide World of Sports complex in Orlando, Florida in the National High School Cheerleading Championships in February 2020.
