Prevention Rocks Movie Night May 26th at the Historic Courthouse

The Smith Count Drug Prevention Coalition will host the 3rd Annual Prevention Rocks Movie Night at the Historic Courthouse on May 26th in downtown Carthage. The event celebrates Mental Health & Drug Prevention Awareness! Activities and the movie will start at dusk. The feature movie is “Switched” and brings awareness to the real-life challenges teens are facing today. Carthage Rotary Club “All You Can Eat” Pancake Breakfast set for May 12th & 13th, 2023

The Carthage Rotary Club will offer their Spring “all-you-can-eat” pancake breakfast on Friday, May 12 and Saturday, May 13 at 939 Upper Ferry Road (next to the Smith County Chamber of Commerce) in Carthage. Breakfast will be served from 6:00 AM until 9:30 AM on Friday and from 7:00 AM until 9:30 AM on Saturday. Tickets may be purchased for $6.00 from any Rotarian
or at the door. Rotarians will deliver carry-out orders to Carthage and Gordonsville for free. Proceeds will benefit the scholarships awarded to seniors at Smith County High School and at Gordonsville High School.

National Day of Prayer Celebration at Historic Courthouse May 4th

A community effort to celebrate the National Day of Prayer will be held on Thursday, May 4, 2023 at 5 p.m. at the Historic Courthouse in Downtown Carthage.

The National Day of Prayer that we know today was a co-founded effort between the United States Congress and President Harry S. Truman. The holiday was signed into law by President Truman, and every president since has signed a proclamation that encourages Americans to pray on and celebrate this day. The national holiday has always been the first Thursday of May every year since it was founded in 1952.

FREE Mental Health First Aid Class on May 25th

The Smith County Drug Prevention Coalition will be partnering with Tennessee Tech Addiction Prevention and Support Coalition and TTU Rural Reimagined to host a Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) class on Thursday, May 25th at the Smith County Chamber of Commerce from 8:30 a.m. – 5 p.m.

The class is designed to help people in all positions of the community and walks of life to identify, understand and respond to signs of mental illnesses and substance use disorder. Participants may qualify for continuing education credits or professional development credits. Register by scanning the QR code above.

Commodities Distribution May 16th at the Ag Center

The Upper Cumberland Human Resource Agency (UCHRA) will hold a commodities distribution for Smith County on Tuesday, May 16, from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. at the Smith County AgriculturalCenter.

Sign-up will be available at the distribution site, or online at uchra.org/communityservices. The Upper Cumberland Human Resource Agency does not discriminate on the basis of age, race, sex, color, national origin, religion, or disability in admission to, access to, or operations of its programs, services, or activities. This project is funded under a Grant Contract with the State of Tennessee.

Notice of Public Meeting of Dale Hollow Rural Planning Organization

Pursuant to Chapter 442, Tennessee Public Act of 1974, “The Sunshine Law” the Dale Hollow Rural Planning Organization will hold a meeting on Thursday, May 11, 2023. Caney Fork Abate Swap Meet and Car and Bike Show

Caney Fork Abate with host a Swap Meet with a car and bike show on Saturday, April 29, 2023 from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. at the National Guard Armory, 101 Transport Drive in Gordonsville. Admissions is $5. Car and Bike Show registration is $10.

CMT/ABATE Inc., is a non-profit organization that was formed to preserve freedom and safety for all Tennesseans who enjoy motorcycling. They strive to modify existing laws that are detrimental to motorcycle safety, enjoyment, and to enact new legislation in support of all motorcyclists who ride in Tennessee.

Smith County Fine Arts Center/Theater Art Contest

The Smith County Fine Arts Center/Theater will host an Art Contest in honor of mothers. Local artists are invited to participate. Artwork is due Saturday, April 22, 2023 at the Historic Smith County Chamber of Commerce beginning at 9 a.m.

One of the highest honors in life one can undertake is the role of a mother in whatever form that might be. Artists can present artwork representing your own mother, mother-in-law, grandmother or someone else who has served as a mother figure and made an enormous positive impact on your life.

The Rules: To enter this contest, you must submit your own original work of art. This could be a painting, drawing, sculpted work, photography etc. with a mother being the focal point of the work of art. After all submissions are judged, honorable mentions along with the two winners will be displayed on the bottom floor of the historic Smith County Courthouse.

Submit your work on Saturday April 22nd 9 a.m – 12 p.m. You will need to sign a form releasing the SCFAC from liability for damage or loss of your artwork. Winners and honorable mentions will be announced on May 6th and displayed in the courthouse. All other entries can also be picked up at the courthouse May 6th or May 20th.

3rd Annual Fish Fry Fundraiser Benefiting the Smith County Pregnancy Help Center Saturday April 22, 2023

The Pregnancy Help Center will host its 2nd Annual Carryout Fish Fry, on Saturday, April 22nd from 4-6pm at the Smith County Chamber of Commerce.

Meals include: Fried catfish, french fries, hush puppies, coleslaw, and white beans. Meals can be picked up the day of the event but pre-orders are encouraged.

The cost is $12 per plate, and pre-sale tickets may be purchased at Gordonsville Drugs, Hackett’s Discount Drugs, Smith County Drugs, local banks including Smith County Bank, Citizens Bank, Bank Tennessee, Wilson Bank and Trust, the Smith County Chamber of Commerce and the Pregnancy Help Center.
