Upper Cumberland Weather hosts ‘Twister’ movie night in Pleasant Shade

On the evening of Saturday, June 22nd, Upper Cumberland Weather will host a showing of the iconic 1996 film “Twister”. Residents and visitors alike are encouraged to mark their calendars and get ready for a night filled with thrills, nostalgia, and community spirit.

This much-anticipated event will feature tickets available at the door for a price of $5 each. Proceeds from ticket sales will support Upper Cumberland Weather and contribute to the fundraising efforts for a new studio. The doors will open at 6:30 p.m., and the film will begin rolling at sunset, as soon as it’s dark enough inside the gymnasium to avoid any distractions.

In addition to the thrilling on-screen action, attendees can look forward to a variety of concessions. From classic movie snacks like popcorn and candy to more substantial fare such as hamburgers and hot dogs, there will be something for everyone.

Upper Cumberland Weather’s first-ever live event comes with heightened anticipation, thanks to the upcoming release of “Twisters,” the long-awaited sequel set to hit theaters in July. Organizers have already announced plans to show the sequel as soon as it becomes available on streaming and Blu-ray.

The event is made possible through the generous sponsorship of local businesses. Special thanks go to Teresa’s Gifts & Tanning Salon and Marianne Underwood of Underwood Hometown Realty for their support in bringing this movie experience to life.

As the community gathers to enjoy the whirlwind adventure of “Twister,” they will also be contributing to the betterment of the free services that UCW provides to the community. Don’t miss out on this unique opportunity to enjoy a beloved film, support local initiatives, and be part of Pleasant Shade’s growing tradition of community events.

Follow Upper Cumberland Weather on Facebook for more information about this event and upcoming events.

Save the Date: 2024 Community Kidz Choir Camp

Save the date for the 2024 Community Kidz Choir Camp on July 15th-19th and the community worship service on Saturday, July 20th. More information will be coming next month!

Since this camp is transitioning to a community effort, the event requires adult volunteers to assist with preparing for this year’s camp! The camp especially needs assistance with communications efforts. This includes:

  • For camp: social media promotion, posting of flyers, contacting local churches and groups, Smith County Insider, etc. (and later the same thing for the community-wide worship service)
  • Kidz Choir camp registration and parent/teen communications
  • Coordination of teen camp volunteers
  • Coordination of t-shirt design/orders
  • Coordination of set-up of Ag Center on July 14th and break-down after performance/worship service on July 20th

The event will also need on-site adult volunteers during the camp to assist with snacks, bible lessons, crafts, and more.

If you are gifted in one of these areas, the camp would greatly appreciate your assistance. Please message “Exalt Teen & Community Kidz Choir” on Facebook, text 615.683.7122, or email halfahundredacrewood@gmail.com.

Tennessee’s Bobby Wilson Free Fishing Day June 8

The 2024 Bobby Wilson Free Fishing Day is set for Saturday, June 8 in Tennessee. All state residents and visitors of any age may fish for free without a license in Tennessee’s public waters. Additionally, youth ages 15 or younger may fish for free the entire week, beginning on Free Fishing Day and continuing through the following Friday, June 14.

Every year since 1991, the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA) has provided the annual free fishing opportunity in hopes of introducing children and families to fishing and outdoor recreation. Each year, the agency stocks several thousand pounds of fish across the state to ensure high-quality and exciting fishing for participants. Fishing is not only a great family activity but also helps bring awareness to the natural environment.

TWRA and numerous communities and partner organizations have planned special fishing events across the state. A special thanks goes to Academy Sports + Outdoors for its continued statewide sponsorship for Bobby Wilson Free Fishing Day. Visit the TWRA events page for a full list of locations and details Tennessee TWRA License – Events Home (gooutdoorstennessee.com).

Free Fishing Day is named in honor of Bobby Wilson who retired in 2022 after more than 40 years of service to the TWRA. He served in the Fisheries Division for 35 years, before being named TWRA Deputy Director in 2015 and Executive Director in 2020.

Bobby Wilson Free Fishing Day and Free Fishing Week applies to Tennessee’s public waters, TWRA owned and operated lakes, and state park facilities. Some privately

owned pay lakes continue to charge during this special day and week. Anglers will need to consult with those operators if there are any questions about a facility.
