SCI Spotlight: Morgan Wood, Women’s Wheelchair Basketball National Champion

April 17, 2018

Morgan Wood

Smith County Insider recently had the chance to sit down with Gordonsville native, Morgan Wood, and discuss her second NWBA Intercollegiate National Championship win. See interview below.

A birth defect left Wood partially paralyzed, but she knew she had athletic strength and began her wheelchair basketball career in high school. After graduation, she started her college career at the University of Memphis. Wood later attended a summer wheelchair basketball camp at the powerhouse, University of Texas-Arlington, and fell in love with the school and program so much that she decided to transfer after her freshmen year. In the fall of 2013 is when Wood made her move to Texas. She was asked by the School Director to help her coach, Jason Nelms, form a women’s wheelchair basketball program at UT Arlington. In just under three years, Wood has helped her team recruit multiple players, which ultimately lead to two National Championship wins.

Wood was recently selected to be 1 of 12 athletes to make the cut for the U.S. Women’s World Championships Wheelchair Basketball Team that will compete in the 2018 IWBF World Championships in Hamburg, Germany, in August.
