Welfare Check Leads to Discovery of Drugs and Firearms

December 11, 2017

(Smith County Insider Press) – On November 22, 2017, Sgt. Kendra Grisham, Deputy Jake O’Neal, and Deputy Nick Campbell approached a residence on Lebanon Highway while in the process of performing a welfare check. According to the police report, when the officers arrived at the residence they noted the odor of marijuana emanating from the building. Officers made several attempts to make contact with someone inside the residence before the door was finally answered by Joyce Tedrow (29, Carthage).

According to the police report, while the officers were speaking with Tedrow, a male subject, later identified as James Hewitt (47, McMinnville) began shouting for help from within the residence. Hewitt then ran to the front door and closed it. The officers immediately ordered Hewitt to exit the residence.

When Hewitt exited, he fell to the ground and began shouting that he had been “taken hostage” and had been “shot up with drugs.” At this point, Sgt. Grisham and Deputy Campbell performed a sweep of the residence in order to secure any other occupants and discovered 7 additional occupants. According to the police report, marijuana residue, pipes, scales, and baggies were lying in the residence in plain sight.

All of the occupants denied having any knowledge of the drug-related items, after which they were all transported to the Smith County Jail for investigation. Detective Steve Babcock was notified that a search warrant was needed, and a search warrant was obtained.

According to the police report, officers then returned to the residence and conducted a search. During the search, the following items were found: plastic bag containing a crystal-like substance, scales, meth pipes, various pills, marijuana pipes, marijuana residue, and tubes containing a crystal-like substance. Officers also found two guns during the search of the residence, a Taurus 9mm and a Beretta .380. Additionally, officers searched Hewitt’s vehicle and located a pill bottle containing marijuana.
