So You Want to be a Beekeeper?

May 18, 2016

Interest in beekeeping has grown over the past few years. Beekeeping can be a fun hobby, add extra income to the farm, or even be a full-time occupation. Honey bees are such fascinating creatures and even the most experienced beekeepers learn something new almost every time they go to the hive.

For those new to beekeeping, the questions which arise are seemingly endless. What equipment do I need? How do I obtain and install a new hive? Do I need to plant certain things for nectar? How do I extract the honey?

These are all great questions and answers to them, as well as several others, will be discussed at the upcoming “Beekeeping 101” class to be held June 28 and June 30 at 6:00 p.m. at the Smith County Ag Center in Carthage. The class is designed for those who are new to beekeeping and will provide some excellent educational material.

The registration fee for the 2 night ”Beekeeping 101” program is $15 per person or $20 per couple and includes class materials and refreshments. Those who are interested should contact the Smith County Extension office at 615-735-2900 by June 21 to register.

Beekeeping can be a fun way to add income or just produce a little honey for you and your family. Participating in the “Beekeeping 101” program will give you some tricks of the trade to help get started and avoid potential pitfalls. As always, if you have questions don’t hesitate to contact us.
