School Board opts to purchase Preston Property and move forward with Rose Property donation

Over the past several months, the Smith County Board of Education has discussed purchasing property in the Gordonsville area for a new school facility. The focus of the discussions have been about two properties, known as the Preston Property and the Rose Property.

At the February Board of Eduction meeting on February 20, the board moved to enter into a contingency agreement with John Rose and the Rose Property and move forward with discussions about the details of the agreement. Tommy Manning made the motion and Shane Campbell seconded the motion. The motion unanimously passed.

On Tuesday night, March 6, the Smith County Board of Education held a work session at 5pm to continue discussing the two properties. During the session, board members discussed buying the Preston Property and to continue to move forward with the contingency agreement with the Rose Property.

At 6pm on Tuesday, March 6, the Smith County Board of Education held a Special Called Meeting to consider an option on the Preston Property. Tommy Manning made a motion to purchase the Preston Property. The motion was seconded by David Apple. The motion passed with a 6 to 1 vote. The vote was as follows:

  • Robin Moore – YES
  • Tina Gantenbein – YES
  • Joe Taylor – NO
  • David Apple – YES
  • Brian Smith – YES
