Read to be Ready Grant Will Serve Two Summer Camps in Smith County

June 1, 2017

Carthage Elementary and Gordonsville Elementary have been announced as two recipients of The Read to be Ready Summer Grant, according to the State Department of Education. They are two of 212 grant recipients across the state for this grant. Grant writers, Holly Anderson (CES) and Laurie Glover (GES), stated that the two schools will receive over $80,000 in grant money for their schools. The program is for students who will be entering first, second, or third grade in the fall and is targeted to improve students’ reading and writing.

The camp will not feel like school. Students will create writing booklets, complete science enrichment activities, be provided snack and lunch daily, attend field trips, have a one teacher to five students ratio, and receive 8-10 books to build their own home library. Students will be encouraged to read anywhere as they travel to other places. Each camp will have unique themes that support, develop, and encourage the love of reading through personalized learning and hands-on activities. Both camps will run the month of June from Monday-Thursday. Camp directors are excited about this special opportunity for the two schools and are looking forward to students making great gains in reading and writing this summer in order to be better prepared for the next school year.

The Tennessee Department of Education and Human Services, with support from Commissioner McQueen and First Lady Crissy Haslam, have partnered to expand the Read to be Ready Grant program through an investment of $30 million over the next three years. The program started in 2016 and is designed to support students in their reading and writing skills during the summer.
