(Smith County Insider Press) – On December 8, 2017, Smith County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Nathan Williams was crossing the Carthage Bridge towards South Carthage when he noticed that the year decal on the license plate of the car in front of him appeared to be altered.

According to the police report, the vehicle was a blue Mazda Miata, but the license plate came back to a green Toyota sedan with expired tags from August 2016. Due to the altered tag and the non-matching registration, Deputy Williams activated his emergency equipment on Highway 70 West.

At this time, according to the police report, the vehicle, driven by Johnny Reb Williams (44, Alexandria), turned around and went back across the Carthage bridge.

Deputy Williams pursued the vehicle on Upper Ferry Road to the Highway 25 bypass. Detective Steve Babcock and Deputy Williams attempted to box the vehicle in, but Johnny Williams struck Detective Babcock’s patrol car and spun out.

According to the police report, Williams continued to lead officers on a pursuit down Hospital Drive, through the Wilson bank and Trust Parking lot, down Main Street towards Turkey Creek, onto Hartsville Pike, and eventually onto Crook Lane, where Williams reportedly left his vehicle and fled on foot into the woods.

Deputy Nathan Williams, Detective Steve Babcock, and Deputy Robin Bellar pursed the suspect up the hill into the woods, issuing commands for him to stop.

After a short distance, Williams surrendered.

THP Trooper Mark Jones came to the scene to work the wreck incident with Detective Babcock’s vehicle.

The suspect was placed under arrest and transported to the Smith County Jail for processing.

Williams is charged with reckless endangerment, evading arrest, and alteration of tags.
