First Gold Sneaker facility in Smith County

June 21, 2018

CARTHAGE, Tenn. – Improving the health and well-being of children should be a top priority for any community, and Mrs. Tammy’s Learning and Play Center in Carthage is doing just that. Staff at the daycare recently went through a certification program with the Tennessee Department of Health to receive their designation as a Gold Sneaker facility, making them the only childcare facility in the county to be recognized by the Gold Sneaker program.

By obtaining this recognition, Mrs. Tammy’s Learning and Play Center is affirming their commitment to healthy, happy children. When asked about the program, center director Tammy Profitt said, “I am so glad that Smith County Health Department provided me information about this opportunity.”

Gold Sneaker is a state initiative designed to enhance policy related to health and wellness within licensed child care facilities across Tennessee by looking at daycare policies related to physical activity, tobacco usage and nutrition within and on daycare property. The program serves as an enhancement to existing Department of Human Services related policies and adds a tobacco-free campus policy. This helps ensure children are not only receiving physical activity and nutrition recommendations, but that they are also protected from dangers such as secondhand smoke. In addition to contributing to the health of children, participating facilities receive an incentive package that includes physical activity equipment and decals to help promote their facility as a Gold Sneaker designee.
