Submitted by Mary Parker Draper, UT Extension Agent:
The University of Tennessee Extension in Smith County recently partnered with the Smith County Health Department to offer Walk Across Tennessee in Smith County. Walk Across Tennessee is a program that persuades and motivates people of all ages to make that most important change . . . to get started.
Teams of eight worked towards the goal of walking, biking, swimming, etc. “across Tennessee” from Bristol to Memphis. All eleven teams “walked” the distance of Tennessee, a little over 500 miles! This eight week program concluded on September 2, 2018.
Thank you to our wonderful Walk Across Tennessee program sponsors: DTC, Smith County Drug Center, Citizens Bank, Sanderson Funeral Home, Riverview Regional, and Smith County Health Department. Each participant received a Walk Across Tennessee T-Shirt because of our sponsors’ donations.
The teams for this year’s Walk Across Tennessee program were Citizens Bank A and B, The Drug Prevention Coalition, Faith Steppers, Night Owl’s Team 1 and 2, Happy Feet, The Volunteers, Quads of Fury, and Doc’s Monkeys.
Our third place team, The Drug Prevention Coalition finished with 1,516.78 miles!
Our second place team, Happy Feet, completed a total of 1,877.85 miles!
Our first place team, Night Owls Team 1, crossed the finish line with a total of 2,069.85 miles!
Congratulations to all the teams for completing this eight week journey! You all made a huge accomplishment!
This year as well as awarding the teams with the most miles, we also awarded most Outstanding Team Captain to Ashley Williams and Most Enthusiastic Team to Docs Monkeys.
If you are interested in competing in the Walk Across Tennessee program next year, please contact Mary Parker Draper at the extension office at (615) 735-2900.
