Woman faces DUI and vehicular assault charges

According to the police report, Amy Sue Barnes (46, Brush Creek) was traveling south on Highway 53 when her vehicle crossed into oncoming traffic and struck another vehicle head-on.

When THP troopers Cooper and Neal arrived at the scene, they noted that Barnes’s speech was slurred and there was a strong odor of alcohol. According to the police report, Barnes was asked how much she had had to drink that day, and her response was, “Not enough.” Barnes stated she had been drinking beer and liquor.

Barnes was unable to attempt a field sobriety test, as she was quickly strapped onto a gurney and transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center for her injuries.

This incident marked the 4th charge of DUI for Barnes, who had been previously convicted in 2005, 2008, and 2016.

Additionally, according to the police report, the vehicle registration of the Chevy Malibu Barnes was driving had been altered prior to the incident.

Barnes is charged with driving under the influence (4th Offense), vehicular assault, driving on revoked, alteration of tag, failure to exercise due care, and violation of probation.
