UT Extension News: “Water Management in the Landscape Lunch and Learn Scheduled”

March 30, 2020

by Chris Hicks, County Director – UT Extension Smith County

UT Extension’s popular Lunch and Learn program will feature a new format in April due to the Covid-19 protocols. The 1-hour event, scheduled for April 1 at noon, will take place live via the online videoconferencing platform Zoom.

According to UT Extension Specialist Dr. Andrea Ludwig, who will be the featured speaker, “Water management in the landscape, particularly in urbanizing watersheds, presents challenges not only at the community scale but also to individual private property owners. The greatest land conversion in recent decades has been from forests to agriculture and then agriculture to urban and suburban development.

These landscape changes affect the way that water moves through it. There are strategies that can be implemented by property owners as well as communities to work with water in the landscape as an amenity, instead of thinking of it as a problem. Features like rain gardens, stream-side buffers, and backyard created wetland ponds can be incorporated into a landscape to help address water challenges while also gaining a range of other benefits from these ecologically-sound practices.”

Residents who would like to watch the webinar live, can do so by logging on to https://tennessee.zoom.us/j/804575273 at noon on April 1.
