UT Extension News: “Backyard Fruit Production” Lunch and Learn – March 6, 2019

February 18, 2019

The following article was submitted by Chris Hicks, UT Extension Agent:

Growing fruit in middle Tennessee can be a challenging task, but also a rewarding one. While there are plenty of diseases, insects, and weather conditions to battle, a fresh peach or blackberry you raised yourself is almost always better than what you’ll find in a grocery store.

Whether you have a couple of apple trees in the backyard, or a vineyard with hundreds of grape vines, attention to detail and good agronomic practices will greatly increase your chances of success. With that in mind, we are happy to announce our March 6 Lunch and Learn will feature UT Extension Fruit & Nut Specialist Dr. David Lockwood.

If you have ever read any fruit related publications from UT Extension, Dr. Lockwood’s name will sound familiar to you. He is one of the leading experts of fruit tree and small fruit production in the southeast, and has worked with nurseries, orchards, and vineyards all over the world.

For this session of our monthly Home, Farm, & Garden Lunch & Learn series, we are focusing on “Backyard Fruit Production,” although seasoned pros will certainly pick up tips they can use. Topics will include which species and varieties do well here, management, and pest & disease control.

I hope you will make plans to join us on March 6 from noon until 1:00 p.m. at the Smith County Chamber of Commerce for our “Backyard Fruit Production” Lunch and Learn. The cost for lunch is only $5 and you can reserve your spot by calling the UT Extension office at 615-735-2900 by March 4.
