(Smith County Insider Press) – While conducting a covert drug investigation on May 5, 2020, Sergeant Junior Fields enlisted the assistance of a citizen informant who had, on two separate occasions, purchased heroin from Melissa Key (46, Carthage).

According to the police report, Melissa Key and her boyfriend, Christopher Jones (32, Carthage), stated they were in Nashville picking up heroin. It was determined that Key would sell the informant 3 tenths of a gram of heroin and a ball, or 3.6 grams, of Crystal Methamphetamine. The price was $20.00 per tenth of heroin and $150.00 for the methamphetamine for a total of $210.00.

According to the police report, Sergeant Fields made contact with the vehicle being driven by Key and could see Jones moving around inside the vehicle, but he was unable to make a traffic stop until reaching Lebanon Highway at County House Circle due to vehicles between his and Key’s vehicles. Key was asked to step out of the vehicle, and Sergeant Fields explained to her the information he had. After being told he was aware of heroin in the vehicle, Key stated she did not have any on her.

A search of Key’s purse revealed that she was in possession of a small baggie of marijuana, a piece of a suboxone strip, and a small amount of Crystal Methamphetamine. Key was placed under arrest and placed into the back seat of Sergeant Fields’s patrol unit. Key stated that Jones had the Heroin and had placed it in his buttocks after noticing Sergeant Fields behind them. Both Key and Jones were transported to the Smith County Jail for processing.

Key is charged with Criminal Conspiracy to deliver Schedule I (Heroin), Criminal Conspiracy to deliver Methamphetamine, and Possession of Methamphetamine.

Jones is charged with Tampering with Evidence, Criminal Conspiracy to deliver Schedule I (Heroin), and Criminal Conspiracy to deliver Methamphetamine.
