Smith County Weather Report – February 4th, 2021

February 4, 2021

by Steve Norris, Smith County Insider Weather Correspondent

We expect to get back to some sunshine Friday and Saturday with highs of 45 to 50 degrees. Another cold front will swing across the area Saturday night and could bring a few rain showers or snow showers. Precipitation chances will come back Monday night through Wednesday, and that could also be rain and snow. I am expecting much colder weather from the 10th to the 13th and low temperatures may dip into the teens if not colder.

This week we remember one of the biggest snowstorms ever on the Plateau. February 3rd & 4th 1998; the storm brought widespread power outages to the Cumberland Plateau. Interstate 40 was closed at Monterey for 18 hours due to the heavy snow, and traffic was backed up for 13 miles. Winds gusted to 50 mph at times during the snowstorm. Approximately 100,000 electric customers lost power. Jamestown set a record with 20 inches of snow. Monterey had 14 inches , Crossville 10 inches and Livingston had 9.

Daylight Savings Time begins at 2 a.m. on March 13th, so we are just a little over a month away, that extra hour of daylight in the evening will be wonderful in my opinion! Spring begins officially one week later on March 20th. If you have any weather questions or need weather data, you can reach me anytime at weather1@charter.net
