Smith County Weather Report – December 23, 2020

December 23, 2020

by Steve Norris, Smith County Insider Weather Correspondent

We expect the rain to start mixing with and then change to some snow on Thursday with the temperature dropping. We go down into the teens on Thursday night and don’t recover much on Christmas day, with highs only reaching the upper 20s. I expect our temperature to drop into the teens again on Friday night, but things will improve quickly for the weekend. Saturday is looking sunny and 45 degrees, and Sunday partly cloudy and 52.

Late December can bring a wide variety of rough weather across Middle Tennessee. December 23rd, 1963, got heavy snow with Tullahoma measuring 10 inches. December 23rd, 1998, brought an ice storm to much of the area with numerous power outages, 80% of Coffee County was without power. Christmas Eve 1988, a rare winter F4 tornado traveled from Franklin to Brentwood, destroying 54 homes with one fatality and seven injuries reported. On New Year’s Eve 1951, the temperatures were in the 70s across Middle Tennessee, with Nashville checking in at 76 degrees and Clarksville hit 80.
