February 13, 2020

The Smith County Sheriff’s Office wants to make Smith County residents aware of a phone scam that has recently been brought to their attention.

The Smith County Sheriff’s Office received a complaint of a scam in which the caller pretended to be one of the department’s officers. The scammer stated he was Sgt. Steve Babcock with the Smith County Sheriff’s Department and that the victim had missed jury duty and a warrant was issued for their arrest.

The scammer stated that the arrest could be avoided if $1486 was sent by purchasing prepaid green dot Visa cards and texting a photo of the front and back of the cards.

The scammer told the victim that if they didn’t pay the fine, they would be arrested.

Attached is the voicemail recording that that scammer is using.

Please be aware and on the lookout for any potential scams.
