Smith County Owls Take on The Upperman Bees

May 10, 2021

Smith County was to travel to Cannon County on Monday May 3rd but Cannon forfeited the game.  Thursday May 6th Smith County travelled to Algood to take on the 2A Upperman Bees in the last regular season game.  It was Upperman’s Senior night and they honored their three Seniors before kickoff.  The first goal of the night came with 25 minutes on the clock.  Smith County’s Gavin Boyce was double teamed so he made a nice pass across to Mohammed Abou Rahma who skillfully beat the goalie to find the back of the net.  With less than 8 minutes left in the half Christian Santiago found himself in a battle for the ball just outside the front of the box.  He won the ball and took a powerful shot just above the head of the keep and despite the Bees Keeper’s best effort it was a solid goal for the Owls.  Two minutes left, Gavin Boyce carried the ball down to the box while wearing a Bee defender.  The keep came forward so Boyce nudged the ball in a pass to himself and shot through them to put Smith County up 3-0 at the break.

The second half started with a midfield workout but with 21 minutes on the clock there was some back and forth until Tanner Pierson won a battle to feed the ball to Colby Boyce who sent a screamer through the Keep and two defenders to hit the back of the net for score number four of the game.  Fifteen minutes on the board Captain Salomon Rodriguez brought the ball down to the box while battling two men on, came face to face with the Keep and shot straight through for goal number five.  The last goal of the game would come from Gabe Boyce.  Seven on the clock, Boyce beats the goalie, follows through wins against a defender to shoot the ball in from the corner of the net.  The game was called with 38 seconds left on the time as a storm was rolling in with high wind and rain.  Smith county would take home the 6-0 victory and clean sheet to now prepare for district tournament.

Smith County hosts the 1A District 7 District Tournament this year which will kick off on Tuesday May 11 at 5:30 with Watertown vs Jackson County.  7:30 pm will be Smith County vs the winner of Cannon County and York Institute (we did not have the final score before press time)  Thursday May 13th will be the Championship Game.
