Smith County Owls Soccer takes on York and Portland

April 13, 2021

The Smith County Owls Soccer pitch took a beating over Spring Break.  The recent flooding consumed the field and left behind much debris and items from the neighboring playground.  The Owls and Lady Owls came together to clean and rehab the field so it could be playable.

Tuesday April 6th the Owls hosted Portland for both Varsity and JV games. Playing up, in non district games, is great for growth and preparing for the journey of the season.  The varsity game pushed the Owls but they never stopped fighting.  Portland found the net twice in the first half while Smith County could not quite get there.  The second half the Owls managed to hold the Panthers to a scoreless half.  With 26 minutes left in the game Gabe Boyce managed to connect with a pass from Mohammed Abou Rahma and score Smith County’s only goal of the game. Smith County 1 – Portland 2

The JV game saw Holden Gentry score his first goal of the season. Ultimately Portland would also score four goals of their own.

Thursday April 8th Smith County travelled to York for district play. This was a very different game than we had seen on Tuesday.  Smith County scored seven goals early in the first half with goals coming from Colby Boyce on a corner from Salomon Rodriguez, Gabe Boyce netted goals two and three, Gavin Huddleston scored from a free kick for number four, Gavin Boyce scored number five, completing the Boyce Brothers scores, Rogelio Ortiz put it in the net from a corner taken by Blake Baird, number seven was scored by Rylan Bates.  We saw a lot of JV players subbed in getting field time which is always helpful for confidence and depth.

The Second half, the Owls’ Mohammed Abou Rahma scored assisted by Gavin Boyce.  The coaches were subbing in every available player.  York did manage one goal late.  As a spectator it did appear that even with the lopsided score, York showed great sportsmanship and both sides appeared to have fun, which is always fun to watch.  The game would be called with somewhere around 15 minutes left in the game due to weather.  Smith County 8 – York 1

Next up Smith County will host District rivals Jackson County on Tuesday April 13th and then travel to Watertown on Thursday April 15th.
